Working at height comes with real risk, and the people operating elevated work platforms, scissor lifts, boom lifts, vertical lifts, need more than confidence. They need proper training that meets New Zealand’s Best Practice Guidelines for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) and gives operators the practical skills to handle real machines on real worksites. That’s exactly what Total Access EWP training delivers, in a single day, at branches across the country.
This blog covers what EWP training actually involves, who needs it, what’s covered in a Total Access course, where you can get trained, and the most common questions people ask before they book.
What EWP training is and why it matters
EWP training is about teaching the regulations, guidelines and code of practice for accessing and operating elevated working platforms safely. The training also covers practical exercises that apply and test a trainee’s knowledge of the risks and operational skills required when operating these machines. At Total Access, our trainers bring over 15 years’ experience in the EWP industry and more than 10 years specifically as EWP trainers, so trainees are learning from people who’ve spent their careers in and around these machines.
An EWP license isn’t legally mandatory in New Zealand, but elevated work platform operators must be competent in the safe operation of the machines they use. The 2015 Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) requires employees to undergo rigorous training on how to use equipment safely at work. Machine operators are legally required to receive the training, even though licensing itself is optional.
What’s covered in a Total Access EWP course
Every Total Access EWP training course runs as a one-day programme from 7:45am to 4:00pm. The standard course covers scissor lifts and boom lifts. Trailer-mounted lifts, vertical lifts and truck-mounted booms are available as an optional add-on for an additional cost.
The training itself is designed to:
- Ensure employee safety when working at height
- Build operator confidence on the machines
- Improve hazard management – identifying, assessing and controlling common hazards
- Strengthen emergency response capability
- Build knowledge of different EWP types and their correct applications
All Total Access training programmes are approved by EWPA (Elevated Work Platform Association), the Department of Labour, NZOSH (New Zealand Occupational Health & Safety), HIANZ/Silvercard and PCANZ. Courses are also NZQA accredited, and results are sent directly to the New Zealand Qualification Authority for the relevant NZQA Unit Standard to be awarded.
Where you can train
Total Access runs EWP courses at five locations: Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch. That nationwide footprint means most New Zealand businesses can train staff close to where they actually work, without long travel days or accommodation costs.
Discounted rates apply on group bookings – useful for construction firms, property maintenance teams and councils training multiple operators at once.
How long the licence lasts
Under WorkSafe NZ guidelines, EWP operators need refresher training every three years. New Zealand’s Best Practice Guidelines require the same. Once trained, operators receive access to the online licence portal within two working days. Physical licences are also available on request and arrive within 7–10 working days.
Common questions before you book
Do I need an NZQA number first? No – Total Access handles that as part of the training.
Is EWP training the same as working-at-height training? No. EWP covers the safe operation of elevated platforms like scissor lifts and boom lifts. Height training is separate and covers harnesses, fall arrest systems and related fall-prevention work.
What if someone fails? It’s rare, but if a trainee isn’t deemed competent to operate EWPs safely, Total Access works with them to gain more experience before reassessing.
